Dealing with a Painful
Ingrown Toenail?
That sharp, throbbing pain at the edge of your toe might seem small, but an ingrown toenail can quickly become a big problem. Left unmanaged, it can lead to swelling, infection, and constant discomfort that affects every step you take. Whether you’re on your feet all day or simply trying to wear shoes comfortably, an ingrown toenail can seriously disrupt your routine.
Many people attempt at-home remedies or wait for the nail to “fix itself,” but without proper care, the issue often worsens, causing deeper nail penetration, recurring infections, and more severe pain. Temporary fixes rarely address the underlying cause.
At East Coast Podiatry, we offer long-term support. Our skilled podiatrists provide proactive care tailored to your condition. Whether it’s conservative care or a minor procedure, we focus on managing the pain while preventing future flare-ups. With expert guidance and a personalised care plan, we’ll help you walk confidently again.
Stop living with the discomfort
What are the Common Causes of an Ingrown Toenail?
Ingrown toenails are often caused by improper nail trimming or changes in toenail shape. Specifically, individuals with highly curved or wide toenails are particularly prone to this issue. Without proper care, ingrown toenails can recur, leading to ongoing discomfort.
Beyond improper trimming and toenail shape, several other factors contribute to this condition:
- Nail Trauma
- Nail Picking
- Nail Picking
- Frequent Pedicures
- Wrong Footwear

What is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or corner of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, rather than over it. This typically affects the big toe and can cause pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection if not managed properly.
Identifying these signs promptly allows for timely intervention and appropriate management. By understanding the causes and symptoms, you can take proactive steps to address this condition.

NewGreat experience at East Coast Podiatry (Orchard)! Had a persistent nail fungus issue over the last couple of years and it was solved so quickly and efficiently with the team. My podiatrist - Ms Peggy explained and assessed my condition in great detail, and recommended me the follow up actions required to get the issue all treated. Was an overall superb and pleasant treatment experience 🙂

We have been with Gerorgina for my daughter in-toes and flat foot issue. Gone through a thorough treatment, exercises, feet braces and we can see massive improvement in my daughter's posture and feet.
Georgina and the staff have been very helpful and making every visit smooth and pleasant. Keep up the good work!

Our 6-year-old son had very severe in-toeing when we first visited Dr. Michael in October 2024. We’re incredibly thankful for his expertise—after just 8 months of treatment, our son is now very close to having an ideal foot structure.
What we appreciated most was the all-in-one pricing—it covered everything from braces to follow-ups, making the treatment both convenient and great value for money. The clinic’s location in Orchard is also a big plus for accessibility. Highly recommend Dr. Michael, especially for concerned parents dealing with pediatric foot issues!

How is an Ingrown Toenail checked?
Assessing an ingrown toenail involves a careful physical examination by a podiatrist. They will check for signs like redness, swelling, and tenderness around the nail.
Additionally, the podiatrist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and any activities that could have injured the toenail. This information helps pinpoint contributing factors and gauge the condition’s severity.
A detailed evaluation allows the podiatrist to recommend appropriate next steps and tailor a care plan that aligns with your individual needs.
What are the options to manage an Ingrown Toenail?
Here in Singapore, various options to manage ingrown toenails are available, ranging from temporary pain relief to long-term care. Considering the causes and the likelihood of recurrence discussed earlier is essential before deciding on the best care.
Some support options include:
- Nail Spike Trim: Provides short-term pain relief.
- Nail Bracing: Helps correct the nail growth pattern.
- Antiseptic Foot Soak: Used to prevent infections.
- Wound Care: Necessary if there is active bleeding or discharge.
- Customised Foot Orthotics: Provides support and reduces pressure on the toenails.
- Nail avulsion: A surgical procedure used to manage severe or recurrent ingrown toenails. It involves the removal of part or the whole toenail to alleviate pain and prevent further issues. There are two main types of nail avulsion: Partial Nail Avulsion and Total Nail Avulsion.
What are the things to take note of after an ingrown toenail surgery?
Proper care after ingrown toenail surgery is essential for wellness and preventing complications.
Here are some dos and don’ts to follow:
- Rest and Elevate Your Foot: Try to reduce activity and keep your foot elevated to minimise swelling.
- Minimise High-Impact Activities: If activities are unavoidable, do not participate in those that put a lot of pressure on your toes.
- Keep It Clean: Follow your podiatrist’s instructions for cleaning and dressing the surgical site to prevent infection.
- Wear Appropriate Footwear: Choose open-toed shoes to avoid pressure on the toes. If you need to wear closed shoes, ensure they are loose-fitting.
- Be Cautious: Be careful not to bump or injure your toe to prevent further damage.
- Monitor Symptoms: If you notice increased pain, redness, swelling, or discharge, contact your podiatrist promptly, as these could be signs of infection.
- Follow Up: Attend any follow-up appointments with your podiatrist to monitor the progress and address any concerns.
Following these guidelines can help support comfort and minimise complications after an ingrown toenail procedure.
How to prevent an Ingrown Toenail?
For those who have experienced repeated episodes, here are some preventive measures you ought to take:
- Avoid tight-fitting footwear.
- Cut your nails straight across and not curved down the edges.
- Round off any sharp edges with a file after each trim.
Is it okay to dig out an ingrown nail myself?
- Infection: Using non-sterile tools and improper techniques can introduce bacteria, causing an infection.
- Increased Pain:Digging out the toenail can be very painful and may worsen the condition.
- Damage: You risk damaging the surrounding skin and nail bed, which can worsen the problem.
Instead of trying to dig out the ingrown toenail yourself, it is best to seek professional help. A podiatrist can safely remove the ingrown toenail, providing relief and preventing further complications. If you have an ingrown toenail, contact us for proper care and management.
