Bump-on-Your-Big

What That Bump on Your Big Toe Really Means

You may have noticed a bony bump forming on the side of your big toe. Known as a bunion, or hallux valgus, this condition often signals a structural imbalance in your foot. Although it may initially appear harmless, a bunion can gradually impact your foot’s natural movement and add strain to nearby areas. Over time, inflammation from this misalignment can lead to persistent pain, making daily activities like walking or even standing feel challenging.

Recognising-Bunion-Signs

Symptoms Checklist

Bunions can cause a range of symptoms that affect your comfort and mobility. Recognising these signs early is important for effective management and preventing further discomfort. Here are some of the most frequent symptoms to watch out for.

  • Visible bony bump at the base of the big toe (1st MTP joint).
  • Stiffness or discomfort in the big toe joint.
  • Aching or throbbing pain, especially during movement or bending of the toe.
  • Swelling and redness, inflammation.
  • Corns or calluses from friction caused by tight footwear.
  • Possible development of hammer toes in other toes.

Early intervention is key. Speak with our podiatrists to accurately identify any underlying structural issues.

What are the Common Causes of Bunion?

Bunions and bunionettes form gradually due to ongoing pressure on the toe joints. A bunion develops when the big toe leans toward the second toe, creating a bump near the big toe joint. A bunionette develops in a similar way at the base of the little toe, along the outer side of the foot.

  • Poorly Fitting Shoes: Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes contribute to pressure and deformity.
  • Genetics: Family history plays a significant role in predisposition.
  • Medical Conditions: Arthritis and other health issues can affect joint integrity.
  • Physical Activities: Repetitive stress or certain sports may exacerbate symptoms.

What Happens If Bunions Are Left Untreated?

Over time:

  • Pain becomes more frequent and severe
  • Walking patterns change, causing knee, hip, or back issues
  • The condition may progress into long-term tissue damage
  • Recovery becomes slower and more complex

Early intervention significantly improves outcomes and reduces recovery time.

my feet are plagued by multiple issues ive lost track of the order in cause &/or effect of my feet woes. the main issues would be my extremely flat feet and atrocious bunions. with horrid feet form at its core, i gradually developed a gross case of callouses (ie not just big callouses but i had callous growing over another existing callous) to the point it started making me limp cos it got painful to walk. i had seen multiple orthopedic doctors before and i was either offered to get custom arch insoles made (which proved too uncomfortable cos its essentially forcing my bone to form an arch that i wasnt born with) or surgery to sort out the bunions (which i wasnt keen on cos not being conveniently mobile for more than 6weeks was just not an option for me). i bought a buncha self help products but there was barely any improvement. i was at my wits end. thankfully i chanced upon a facebook ad by east coast podiatry and thought to give it a shot. dr jordan gave my feet hope. firstly by giving me a better overall understanding of my feet condition. instead of boring xrays that may or may not detect whatever issue, the clinic was equipped with advanced machinery that was able to pinpoint with such precision issues i hadnt realized i had. for eg using targeted ultrasound he was able to point out instantly my toe joints were wearing and tearing from overcompensation. instead of just reiterating feet issues ive been well aware of for years, with additional knowledge of peripheral issues he managed to uncover, he is the first specialist in my years of seeing feet doctors to offer me an alterntive solution to the usual arch insole and bunion surgery - custom heel insoles to lift my feet and relieve pressure off parts of my feet that have been overcompensating in lieu of not having normal feet form. i used to be ashamed of my feet but dr jordan has unexpectedly provided me a refreshed point of view that callouses are actually the body’s way of protecting itself. annoying as callouses can be, instead of seething resentment for it, i now have learnt to be grateful for my body’s self protection mechanism and am learning how to develop a better cohesive partnership for overall wellness. since coming to east coast podiatry, ive been walking with much more ease and if im having a good day i can now even manage spring into a skip or two in my step. thanks so much dr jordan!

It was my first time seeing a podiatrist specialist, and I'm truly glad to have been looked after by Dr. Michael Widjajana. He took the time to explain my condition clearly, helping me understand my concerns about the ganglion cyst and bunions. Dr. Michael assured me that it’s still at Stage 1, so surgery isn’t necessary at this point. Instead, he recommended conservative treatment, including custom foot orthotic therapy for short-term relief and bunion correction. He also advised me to wear proper wide-toe shoes with good arch support, and thoroughly explained the causes and effects of my condition. I truly appreciate his professional guidance and care for my foot health. 👣

I visited East Coast Podiatry (Orchard) as I could not stand due to the pain in my feet from bunions. Thanks for my podiatrist, Mr. Michael, I have perfect insoles and can walk without feeling any pain. He advised me what brand and model of shoes would be suitable for my bunion feet. He also taught me several ways of tying shoe laces to make my feet more comfortable, which was very informative. I am now confident to go back to my training and exercises like before.

I went to East Coast Podiatry recently as I noticed a bump under my toe. The foot examination conducted by my podiatrist (Yashin) was very detailed and complete to pinpoint the root cause - which was a bunion I didn't know of. Also addressed other foot concerns like aching feet and dry heel (the cream is very effective). I had a few sessions of SIS and I can feel that my feet ache less at the end of the day. The treatment was comfortable and painless. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and the staff here are very friendly too.

Mar 2026

I visited East Coast Podiatry for the first time on a Saturday morning as a walk-in. Luckily, they had an immediate availabile slot and referred me to Dr Gayatri. She was very friendly, professional, and detailed in explaining the cause of my achilles tendinitis, attributing it to my unnoticed bunion. Given my recent foot surgeries, she chose a more conservative treatment plan instead of shockwave therapy. She recommended specific medical shoe brands, custom foot orthotics and light exercises first. She also made sure I felt comfortable during the ultrasound scan, explaining in detail about the sonogram images, pointing out a spur and area of inflammation. The assessment included other foot scans and mobility tests, which was very thorough and comfortable.

From the 30-minute consultation, I learnt so much from Dr Gayatri like it was a mini crash-course. Very eye-opening actually. She answered all my questions very promptly, showed empathy and professionalism, and I could see her passion and heart in helping me feel better.

The fees were higher than I had expected because I assumed it would be a simple treatment. However, the receptionist explained the cost upfront during registration ($150 consultation + $300 assessment + additional treatment cost), and I fully trust in Dr Gayatri's judgment after hearing her detailed assessment. Thank you for making my first consultation both stress-free and highly educational.

What is a bunion?

A bunion is a bony protrusion at the base of the big toe where the toe pushes against the adjacent toe. It often causes pain, redness, and swelling. A related condition, bunionette (or “Tailor’s Bunion”), affects the little toe joint on the outer foot.
