What Causes an Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments that support the joint are overstretched or torn, leading to pain, swelling, and instability. This can affect movement and, if left unaddressed, may result in chronic weakness or recurring injuries.

Common Causes of Ankle Sprains:

What starts as a minor discomfort can quickly become a chronic problem. Over time, poor biomechanics and unmanaged concerns can contribute to more serious issues or ongoing joint stress, potentially affecting mobility and quality of life.

  • Sudden twisting movements – stepping on uneven surfaces or landing awkwardly.
  • Sports-related injuries – high-impact activities that involve jumping or rapid direction changes.
  • Wearing unsupportive footwear – unstable shoes that increase the risk of rolling the ankle.
  • Weak or fatigued muscles – reduced ankle stability, making sprains more likely.

If you’re experiencing discomfort from an ankle sprain, early care can help manage the issue before it worsens.

What are the Common Causes of an Ankle Sprains?

  • Twisting, rolling, or turning the ankle inward (inversion) or outward (eversion) during movement
  • Landing awkwardly from a jump, as in sports like volleyball or basketball
  • Walking or running on uneven surfaces
  • Wearing improper footwear, especially during physical activity
  • Sudden changes in direction, often seen in athletes
  • Previous injuries that weaken soft tissues and ligaments
  • Lack of warm-up or poor balance before exercise

What is Ankle Sprains?

Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries, often resulting from an inward (inversion) or outward (eversion) rolling of the foot that injures one or more ligaments. In Singapore, ankle sprains usually account for up to 85% of ankle injuries.

The most frequently affected ligament in inversion sprains is the anterior talofibular ligament, one of the lateral ligaments of the ankle. Medial ligament injuries from eversion are less common but may occur in severe sprains.
There are various chronic conditions that cause ankle pain. It can be the result of an unresolved fracture, Peroneal Tendon injuries, Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD), gout, rheumatoid arthritis, Tarsal tunnel syndrome (nerve compression), infection, and poor structural alignment such as flat foot.

Great experience at East Coast Podiatry (Orchard)! Had a persistent nail fungus issue over the last couple of years and it was solved so quickly and efficiently with the team. My podiatrist - Ms Peggy explained and assessed my condition in great detail, and recommended me the follow up actions required to get the issue all treated. Was an overall superb and pleasant treatment experience 🙂

We have been with Gerorgina for my daughter in-toes and flat foot issue. Gone through a thorough treatment, exercises, feet braces and we can see massive improvement in my daughter's posture and feet.
Georgina and the staff have been very helpful and making every visit smooth and pleasant. Keep up the good work!

Our 6-year-old son had very severe in-toeing when we first visited Dr. Michael in October 2024. We’re incredibly thankful for his expertise—after just 8 months of treatment, our son is now very close to having an ideal foot structure.
What we appreciated most was the all-in-one pricing—it covered everything from braces to follow-ups, making the treatment both convenient and great value for money. The clinic’s location in Orchard is also a big plus for accessibility. Highly recommend Dr. Michael, especially for concerned parents dealing with pediatric foot issues!
