What are the Common Causes of Ankle Sprains and Pain?

Ankle pain can result from a variety of general factors that strain or impact the ankle. These causes often develop over time or arise from everyday habits and routines.

  • Twisting, rolling, or turning the ankle inward (inversion) or outward (eversion) during movement
  • Landing awkwardly from a jump, as in sports like volleyball or basketball
  • Walking or running on uneven surfaces
  • Wearing improper footwear, especially during physical activity
  • Sudden changes in direction, often seen in athletes
  • Previous injuries that weaken soft tissues and ligaments
  • Lack of warm-up or poor balance before exercise

Symptoms Checklist

Common symptoms of an ankle sprain and other ankle pain issues can vary depending on the severity and cause, but these are the most typical symptoms include:

  • Sudden pain after twisting the ankle
  • Swelling around the ankle
  • Bruising or discoloration
  • Tenderness when touching the area
  • Difficulty walking or putting weight on the foot
  • A feeling of instability or “giving way”
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Popping sensation or sound at the time of injury

However if these symptoms persist, the condition may progress from inflammation to long-term tissue damage. Please check with our podiatrists if you experience any of the symptoms above.

Why You Should Not Ignore Ankle Pain

Our-People-Our-Strength-1

Over time:

  • Pain becomes more frequent and severe
  • Walking patterns change, causing knee, hip, or back issues
  • The condition may progress into long-term tissue damage
  • Recovery becomes slower and more complex

Early intervention significantly improves outcomes and reduces recovery time.

5 stars google review - East Coast Podiatry

Mar 2026

I came to east coast podiatry after landing a front handspring terribly, with all of my weight going onto my left foot. This left me with an intense pain on the right side of my left ankle, which I instinctively knew was serious because I had many other ankle injuries in the past. Maria did the initial diagnosis and suggested shockwave therapy for the treatment. The pricing of this treatment plan was made transparent to me (~$4000) and at no point was I “pressured” into taking it up. I took the time to look into the nature of my injury and the treatment suggested, and Maria was happy to answer the questions I had.
Though steep (in price), I accepted that the treatment suggested was my best chance at recovering fully (which is crucial for my line of work), and went through with it. Daveena was the one who handled every one of my shockwave therapy sessions from the 2nd session onwards, and was very professional, accomodating, and answered my questions readily.
I feel that I should mention that the administrative staff displayed integrity by letting me know I could use any brand of sports tape for the ankle taping, instead of insisting I buy the one they offer in-house.

I sprained my ankle and initially thought it wasn't serious, but after a scan, I learned there was some tissue tearing that could lead to ongoing pain if not treated properly. I started working with Ms. Peggy, a specialist who is incredibly nice and supportive. She provided effective treatment and strength training during each session, which ultimately helped me heal. The clinic is clean and well-equipped with plenty of treatment tools. I highly recommend this place!

I had a great experience with East Coast Podiatry kembangan. I came in with an ankle injury and was really impressed by the level of care and professionalism throughout my treatment. The team took the time to properly assess my condition, explain everything clearly, and make sure I was comfortable every step of the way.
A big thank you to the staff for being so attentive, friendly, and supportive. They made what could have been a stressful situation much easier to handle. I truly appreciate the care I received and would highly recommend them to anyone dealing with foot or ankle issues.

Heartfelt thanks to EC Podiatry, specifically Ms Maria Salus (Orchard, Kembangan and Novena)

If you are keen pursuing effective, non-surgical options for your lower limb problems (surgery carries inherent risks), EC Podiatry is undoubtedly the BEST in the country. The organisation is extremely results-focussed and will go above and beyond to ensure you receive the optimal care and treatments necessary for your recovery without cutting corners. They have the latest, top quality medical devices from Europe that can rival the benefits of surgical options, but without the risks associated with surgery.

I suffered from a horrible ankle degeneration condition following an unnecessary steroid injection. It left me completely immobile on a wheelchair for several months with extreme pain. Every specialist I saw jumped at surgery, which would have been an extremely invasive (and risky) one that will put me out much longer from walking. I was patiently nursed back to good health by Ms Maria Salus; not only was she extremely patient and informative in guiding me through each stage of my excruciating slow recovery - she also inadvertently (but very willingly) became my therapist that I looked forward to speaking every week.

Thank you so much Ms Maria, and your wonderful team (Yassin, Ivy, Fatin, Yani, Andika, etc.), for giving me another chance at a healthy life. I am forever grateful.

We would highly recommend visiting Dr Michael at East Coast Podiatry (Bukit Timah Clinic) for any foot-related problems because not only is treatment effective, service is professional and top-notch. I had an overstrained ankle tendon due to a collapsed arch and my husband suffered plantar fascilitis. Both of us were in debilitating pain before we went for treatment. We liked that Dr Lai assured us that with shockwave therapy and rest, we will get better and indeed this is true. We can now walk with little to no pain (we’re still on the path to recovery). We also appreciated the very warm and friendly service provided by the other staff members, who were very helpful with their reminders. We would like to thank Dr Lai and his team for helping us to regain full mobility.

What is an ankle sprain?

An ankle sprain is an injury of the ligaments around the ankle due to excessive rolling or twisting. When this occurs, the ligaments are stretched beyond their normal range of motion, and in severe cases, may result in the tearing of the ligament.
