Achilles Tendon Pain Slowing You Down?
That persistent ache or tightness at the back of your heel could be Achilles tendonitis, a condition that worsens without proper care, making daily activities and exercise increasingly difficult. Ignoring the pain can lead to inflammation, increased risk of rupture, and long-term damage, as temporary relief methods often don’t address the root cause effectively.
At East Coast Podiatry, our licensed podiatrists use advanced diagnostic technology to pinpoint the source of your pain, creating personalised care plans that promote lasting relief and prevent recurrence. Through non-invasive treatments, custom orthotics, and continuous support, we help you return to an active, pain-free lifestyle.
What are the Common Causes of Achilles Tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis usually isn’t caused by a single injury but develops from repeated stress on the tendon.
It often occurs when the body is pushed too hard, too quickly, though other factors may also contribute:
- Leg length discrepancy
- Overuse
- Increasing the intensity of activity too quickly
- Changing training surfaces too abruptly (soft to hard)
- Inappropriate footwear
- Too tight or fatigued muscles
- Not stretching enough before activity
- Deviated or unstable rearfoot axis

What is Achilles Tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon connecting your calf muscles to your heel, often caused by repetitive strain or overuse. This tendon plays a vital role in everyday movement and is especially vulnerable in active individuals. If untreated, the condition can worsen into Achilles tendinopathy, where the tendon fibres degenerate and thicken, potentially leading to scar tissue or calcification. Early diagnosis and proper management are important to prevent lasting damage and help restore normal function.

Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT)
Accelerates repair of damaged tendon tissue through high-energy magnetic pulses, improving outcomes.

Custom Foot Orthotics
Provides enhanced foot alignment and reduces strain on the Achilles tendon during movement, aiding rehabilitation.

Ankle Foot Orthotic
Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFOs) are custom-made devices designed to support both the foot and ankle, providing stability and reducing strain on the Achilles tendon.

NewGreat experience at East Coast Podiatry (Orchard)! Had a persistent nail fungus issue over the last couple of years and it was solved so quickly and efficiently with the team. My podiatrist - Ms Peggy explained and assessed my condition in great detail, and recommended me the follow up actions required to get the issue all treated. Was an overall superb and pleasant treatment experience 🙂

We have been with Gerorgina for my daughter in-toes and flat foot issue. Gone through a thorough treatment, exercises, feet braces and we can see massive improvement in my daughter's posture and feet.
Georgina and the staff have been very helpful and making every visit smooth and pleasant. Keep up the good work!

Our 6-year-old son had very severe in-toeing when we first visited Dr. Michael in October 2024. We’re incredibly thankful for his expertise—after just 8 months of treatment, our son is now very close to having an ideal foot structure.
What we appreciated most was the all-in-one pricing—it covered everything from braces to follow-ups, making the treatment both convenient and great value for money. The clinic’s location in Orchard is also a big plus for accessibility. Highly recommend Dr. Michael, especially for concerned parents dealing with pediatric foot issues!

Podiatry Clinic Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I manage Achilles Tendonitis?
- Perform R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for a new or minor injury – Rest the injury by cutting back on daily activities. Ice the injured site using an ice pack for 15 mins several times a day to reduce the pain. Compression can be performed using an elastic wrap or bandage. Elevate the affected limb to reduce the swelling.
- Perform eccentric stretching of the calf muscles daily, after the acute pain and inflammation have abated.
- Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT) or Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) can accelerate the body’s healing process, provide pain relief, promote reduction in muscle tension, and stimulate the formation of new blood vessels.
- Customised foot orthotics will improve foot alignment and control joint motions during propulsion/ toe-off in the gait cycle and aid in health.
- Immobilisation with the use of a walking boot is needed if the injury is severe, or with an ankle foot orthotic if the patient is able to walk with minimal pressure.
How do I prevent Achilles Tendonitis?
Bunions usually arise from a mix of genetic factors, inherited foot shapes (such as flat feet or low arches), and lifestyle factors like wearing tight or high-heeled shoes. Foot injuries, arthritis, and prolonged pressure from certain activities can also contribute.
Is walking good for Achilles Tendonitis?
Pain with a visible bump on the big toe joint that worsens with pressure or poor footwear is likely bunion-related. Other conditions like gout, bursitis, sesamoiditis, or ganglion cysts have different symptoms, so a podiatric assessment is essential for accurate diagnosis.
Can footwear choices cause or affect Achilles Tendonitis?
Bunions do not resolve without treatment. However, symptom management options include cushioned pads, toe separators, custom orthotics, and splints. In severe cases, medical intervention or surgery may be recommended.
Does Achilles Tendonitis cause footwear to wear out quickly?
Bunions alter foot alignment, pushing smaller toes into cramped positions, which may lead to hammer toes, mallet toes, or claw toes due to the pressure and restricted space.
What are the risks of getting Achilles Tendonitis?
Bunions alter foot alignment, pushing smaller toes into cramped positions, which may lead to hammer toes, mallet toes, or claw toes due to the pressure and restricted space.
How many sessions will I need?
Bunions alter foot alignment, pushing smaller toes into cramped positions, which may lead to hammer toes, mallet toes, or claw toes due to the pressure and restricted space.
Am I suitable for ESWT or EMTT?
